If you just moved to Texas, you have 30 days to get registered. To do so, do the Texas 3-Step…in this order:

  • Take your car or truck to a state inspection station.
Many mechanic shops, full-service gas stations, and oil change locations offer state inspections. When you go, take along your driver license and proof of insurance. If your insurance policy was not issued in Texas, you may need to show proof that you carry the minimum amount of coverage: $30,000 for each injured person (up to a total of $60,000 per accident) and $25,000 for property damage.
  • Get your Texas vehicle registration sticker and license plates at your county tax assessor-collector’s office.
You’ll need to show proof of ownership, such as registration or title from your previous home state, as well as proof of insurance. Again, you may need to show that you carry minimum coverage amounts.
  • Apply for a Texas Driver License at the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) office in your area.
To find the location nearest you, visit http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/ or call (512) 424-2600.
